چکیده

This paper explores two aspects of word use and word meaning in terms of Sinclair's (1991, 1998) distinction between the open-choice principle (or terminological tendency) and the idiom principle (or phraseological tendency). Technical terms such as strobilation are rare, highly domain-specific, and of little phraseological interest, although the texts in which such word occur do tend to contain interesting clusters of domain-specific terminology. At the other extreme, it is impossible to know the meaning of ordinary common words such as the verb blow without knowing the phraseological context in which the word is used. Many words have both a terminological tendency and a phraseological tendency. In some cases the two tendencies are in harmony; in other cases there is tension between them. The relationship between these two tendencies is investigated, using examples from the British National Corpus.

From etymology to modern phraseology: A corpus-based study of structural variants of Chinese idioms in naturally-occurring contexts

Compared with recent developments in English corpus lexicology and phraseology, the study of Chinese lexicology and phraseology still remains at a level similar to what Fernando has described as quasi-lexicography (Fernando, 1996: 10-11) in the study of English idioms, where explanations provided in idiom dictionaries are rather prescriptive and static than descriptive and dynamic: a typical te...

Phraseology and Linguistic Theory a Brief Survey . Introduction

This chapter has three objectives. First, it argues in favor of more rigorous definitions of the term 'phraseologism' on the basis of six dimensions and exemplifies these dimensions for several different kinds of phraseologism. Second, it reviews the ways in which phraseologisms as defined here have figured in three different linguistic approaches: generative linguistics, cognitive linguistics,...

Should Terminology Principles be re-examined?

Operationalization of terminology for IT applications has revived the Wüsterian approach. The conceptual dimension once more prevails after taking back seat to specialised lexicography. This is demonstrated by the emergence of ontology in terminology. While the Terminology Principles as defined in Felber’s manual and the ISO standards remain at the core of traditional terminology, their computa...
